  I think preparation is indeed the Holy Grail when it comes to making a successful audition but I don't think this necessarily applies to other areas of successful musicial performance where spontaneity and necessity often exert their influence. I remember the story of Ray Davies who was riding the train into the studio to record his second album and desperately needed one more song to fill the album. He composed that song right there on the train ride into the studio and recorded that day the Kink's biggest selling hit — Tired of Waiting For You. And of course we all know the story of the Broadway musicial promoter who locked the songwriting crew into a room for thirty minutes with orders to write a hit song or the musical was cancelled. The result– New York, New York.
