Topic: Retching

Does anyone know how retching (dry heaves) affect singing?  Any research?  How about retching prior to singing?

Re: Retching

I know that Striesand used to throw up before every concert, but that probably doesn't help, does it?

Re: Retching

actually i have had that usually the first night. it's actually not that uncommon, backstage at plays and at the opera i've seen some huge heeving opening nights for the full cast lol(i don't usually have that problem doing rock/metal. There is for me an added pressure when working with a cast(so much more can go wrong) missing stage marks, timing with others, costumes etc lol- there is more freedom in rock, metal because you can take over the stage and make it and the audience yours(and i'm a control freak lol) It is very restrictive when you have a music director that want things exact, and acting director that wants it exact, very unforgiving scores and material and then the cast where there can be many personality conflicts between many people at the same time. Some casts are like a family ,some like a war zone in Iraq lol, but somehow it always gets pulled together even if you do puke a bit the first night lol Someone stepped on a girls dress once and yes it ripped off entirely mid scene lol a little duct tape held her togher until intermission but hell thats a knot in every ones throat, just holding back from laughing is the first hard part, then realizing theres 30 people onstage and 3,000 watching and you have to somehow get everything back on cue and insync. it can get insane lol

Re: Retching

Streisand suffered stage fright..........nerves I think are the prime cause and being sick dehydrates the body and shocks the throat muscles so lots of water needed.

Re: Retching

hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii,

Retching is a process in the human body where gastric (and sometimes duodenal) contents are forced into the esophagus, but do not enter the pharynx. Retching usually precedes vomiting, when the upper esophageal sphincter remains closed. If the upper esophageal sphincter is open, vomiting occurs. It is usually caused by a bad smell or choking. Retching involves a deep inspiration against a closed glotis. This, along with contraction of the abdomen leads to a pressure difference between the abdominal and thoracic cavities. As a result, the stomach and gastric contents are displaced upwards towards the thoracic cavity.
