Topic: Vocal chord surgery

I have to go into hospital next wednesday to have a cyst removed from one of my vocal chords, apart from total silence for the first few days, does anyone have any advice about the road to singing recovery?

Re: Vocal chord surgery

Well I survived the surgery and returned back to gigging as normal after only a month or so. I couldn't say that it made an improvements, just gave me back the voice that I had before encountering the cyst.

You should concider that no surgery is without it's risks and concequences! I don't think the technology is around that can predict the outcome of surgery like this yet, the end result could have easily turned out sounding terrible, or worse,.... like Joe Cocker!!! (only kidding).

Before the procedure, my surgeon warned me about this. To be honest, if the cyst wasn't ruining every note and been so uncomfortable, I might have turned it down. Luckily for me the result has been the restoration of my voice with out any deterioration, but that really is the best that you can hope for.

I believe that anyone can, as you say, sing better, but you have to put the hard work in. All the parts of the body associated with singing, (but most importantly the vocal chords and voicebox in this case) are mainly muscular and can be toned, but should be done in the proper way, with vocal excercises etc.  I think you should forget about short cuts, there's far to many minus points!
