Why doesn't my VoiceLive touch recognize midi when I hook it to my Roland Fantom G6? Am I missing something?
Is the VLT set to receive on the same channel the Fantom is sending?
Yes it is. I set all channels to 1 and did everything that the manual and videos say to do. And still nothing. I was trying to use the upper presets like vocoder. This is the first time I've ever tried to midi anything so I thought I may have over looked something.
Does the MIDI light on the VLT blink when you hit a key on the Fantom?
I'm quite familiar with MIDI, but not at all familiar with the Fantom. On my Korg M3, it is possible to have it set up so some or all of the keyboard does not transmit MIDI, or transmits different ranges on different channels.
no it does not blink
Derrick,
I've seen a lot of newbies have the cables swapped (MIDI In in MIDI Out, etc.). I know I've done it myself. You might try swapping them and see if it helps. Also, I assume you are using the MIDI cable, and not the USB attachment, right?
YesI've swapped the cables the MIDI light does not blink
Do you have any other gear with MIDI that you can connect to the Fantom to verify whether it is actually sending out MIDI?
This was a help to me in getting the midi input / control working:

You need to get that LED blinking... It is likely a menu (three menus - Setup, Advanced, and Midi) which needs to be proper. Look in Setup #9 Nat Play Gbl - Set to MIDI. Then Setup #11 Midi Channel - Set to 1 (or whatever your keyboard is outputting).
Go into the Midi Menus and set them up per the instructions in the video above.
How are you cabled? Is it midi or USB from your keyboard?

I Do not have any other gear with MIDI
I've downloaded the Fantom manual and browsed through it......
Page 198 of the Fantom manual - MIDI TX SW - Press [Pad Mode] and press pad [10](MIDI TX SW). Press the pad 1-16 of the channel you want enabled, it should light when that channel is ON.
MIDI is output from the MIDI OUT 5 pin DIN connector.
VLT manual page 18.....
-1 Channel should match the Fantoms channel.
-Check 5-Split Direction and 6-Split Note settings to ensure they are in the zone of the notes you are playing on the keyboard.
-Be sure 10-MIDI Ctrl is set to MIDI input and not USB
I believe on the Fantom there is a way to disable the keyboard control of the internal tone generators and control the tone generators from MIDI IN. By connecting the MIDI OUT of the Fantom to its own MIDI IN you might be able to verify the MIDI OUT is sending MIDI and functioning.

Hi,
It might be worth install midi-ox, http://www.midiox.com.
A rather good utility, does lots of things, but if you get it to monitor the Midi Channel, it might give you an idea of where it is going wrong, on what can actually be seen.
Well i still am not getting a signal even went and purchased a new cable. I've been fighting this for a week. I'm thinking one of my devices may be faulty.
Hi Derrick,
I also use Fantom G8.You should send the midi signal to "external". Fantom sends it by default to internal. What I did is (whether in live or single mode) to hit the button control (F4) then scrolling down to "ctrl switch" and then hit external (F6). It works fine. Don't expect to hear your keyboard in the VLT though.
Are you any good at simple soldering? The link below shows a DIY tester that could test the MIDI OUT of your Fantom.

The Midi-Ox is also a good idea for troubleshooting if you have a PC that has MIDI capabilities.
Here is one more option:
I have a M- Audio Midiman Uno which is a Midi to USB converter cable, which has a blinkin light to indicate when midi is moving in either direction. All you would have to do is plug it into you keyooard output and when Midi is sent, it will light up.

Are you sure the Uno will light up even when it isn't plugged in to USB?
Cause that's where it gets the juice to light up the LED...

Right you are. Well I gave it a shot.
And still nothing
Did you try what i said Derrick?
I have still nothing
Derrick, you are indeed a man of few words. That is not going to help us here.
Several folks have given detailed explanations of how to set up the keyboard and how to set up the VLT. Now you need to tell us in detail exactly what you are doing, - not just "it don't work". If you want to solve this you have to start telling us every button you are pushing so the forum can follow you every step. That's just the way it works!
I get the impression you are a newbee, if so let us know that so we can gauge how much instruction we need to give. If you are experienced with Midi routing let us know that too, because maybe you do have faulty gear and we may all be wasting our time.
You have got a lot of folks involved with your problem so now you need to keep them involved until the problem is solved (..you are gonna love controlling the VLT harmony with your keyboard.

Sorry for the short replies. I do appreciate all of the help. The tips were all executed but still to avail I am not getting the midi light to blink. Looks like we may take the unit and my board in for a test. Because it looks like it might be a flaw in one of my devices. Again my apologies I'M trying this between gigs and stuff. Thank you guys for the help.
I missed half of the post earlier because I read it on my iphone. I am new to midi and the VLT but I love this unit because of its easy use. I tried the Voicetone synth but wasn't as easy to use for my rig. But it was less as far as options. I'm running simple at ho,e just the vlt with my fantom and bose headphones. With an om2 Audix mic...
