Topic: Double sound

I have my VLT hooked up to my pc via usb. I also have another soundcard hooked up, and I'm using this as my main soundcard. I can run both decently thru ASIO4all. I'm sending audio from the VLT to the computer via usb, but I'm using the other soundscard for output, and for playing a software instrument. I do get sound in and out. I have only input from VLT, and output from soundcard switched on in asio4all.

My problem is that I'm hearing "double" vocal sound, as if I was adding chorus to the signal on the pc (I'm not :-))

My guess is that a monitoring signal from VLT is added to the output. Can I switch this off?

Soren

Re: Double sound

Hi Soren,

It sounds like you're hearing monitoring from two sources. Do you have the output of the recording channel muted? You're probably hearing the software input monitor and the output of that same channel at the same time, with your system latency as the delay causing the chorusing.

I almost always record with the channel mute on and input monitoring enabled. Does that make sense?

Cheers,
Craig

Re: Double sound

Hi Craig.

Yes, it does make sense, and I was expecting something like that. I was working inside a standalone vst-host (Cantabile), but tried things in Reaper according to your post.

In order to hear myself while recording, I needed monitoring on the channel switched on AND the channel unmuted. The recorded sound had no "double" effect, but if I can hear myself while recording it's with the "double" effect.

It's as if the VLT is sending the stereo signal to BOTH Reaper AND the output of my soundcard.

Re: Double sound

Hmm, one other thing... are you using any pitch correction? Often people perceive hearing both the sounds coming from their head as they sing and the corrected sounds coming out of the Touch (or any other correction device) as "doubled" since there's phasing between the two.

When you play back the recorded signal, is the "doubling" or "chorusing" gone?

Keep me posted,
Craig

Re: Double sound

As posted the recorded sound is fine, no double sound. I have no pitch correction going on, and the issue remains when in Talk-mode.

With the recorded sound not showing the effect, it's as if the sound from the VLT is sent both to the software on the pc, AND to the output of the soundcard (MOTU Ultralite mk3 hybrid).

I've tried to turn both aux and usb off in the Mix, but no changes.

Re: Double sound

Without seeing the setup it's tough.

It definitely sounds like you're hearing both the input and the output of the track the Touch is recording to... at least, that would make sense latency wise.

I haven't ever used Reaper, so I don't know what they do internally with routing.

Does your other sound card have some sort of input monitoring? Is there a separate control panel for it that may have USB monitoring turned on?

Re: Double sound

Hi Soje,

I would say that the problem you have is purely with latency of eith or both the sound card and the vlt.

As you are after monitoring I would use the headphone jack of the VLT for this purpose :-

In your DAW turn off monitoring of Recorded track, send all DAW output through your soundcard, connect soundcard to VLT aux input. connect headphone to VLT headphone jack and listen there, you should get the mix and the vocal immediately.

Now as there is a slight latency in the daw getting the recorded vocal, you will probably have to shift the recorded track in the daw a small amount to get re-allignement

Hope that helps
