Topic: what to drink before gig?

Hi,
I've heard that it's best to drink water, however some friends drink a little wine and say it helps them. How about some small shot of Vodka?

Its not a good idea... you need to not shock your laryngeal region with alcohol, compromise your hydration and loose your focus on the task at hand... this seems like common sense.

Re: what to drink before gig?

Hi guys

I cross the border with both of you. I think it depends on your nerves and tension state. I would agree with Robert in most cases. However if you have pre-performance nerves and are uptight your voice will suffer not just from the laryngeal region but your whole body tension. In that case I would recommend a small shot of brandy as it immediately relaxes the throat muscles and abdominal muscles and as it is distilled is the 'cleanest' alcohol you can use. Flower remedies are preserved in brandy for this reason. I would have water too (tepid not cold - cold contracts the vocal/throat muscles) and have it on stage and accessible.
I remember years ago a small recording studio I was using had had some female backing singers in and their voices were just not quite 100%......he took them to the pub for one drink and came back and they sang like larks! Alcohol in large amounts is definitely no...because it compromises not just your throat but your whole focus and concentration.....but a shot before a show to calm you I have no issue with. I have occasionally had a glass of wine but usually wait until after the show.

I think a shot or drink will help your nerves. Also, I drink Throat Coat Tea with lemon slices and a crap load of water.

Re: what to drink before gig?

I always drink one shoot before i go onstage, either annisette or amaretto lol, however in general i'm not a drinker unless it's my birthday or new years eve. then you must carry me home. lol

Re: what to drink before gig?

I usually use a combination of room temperature water, and a different type of tea. My favorites are Throat Comfort or Honey Lemon. I'm not much of a drinker (except I love my Manhattan when I go out to dinner), so I can't comment on that. I've recently tried a "Peppermint Menthe". It seemed to work fine for me... (I remember reading a post about the various "mints", but can't remember which one's were not recommended. I can't find that post. Can someone refresh my memory, please). Ginger teas are definitely "out" for me - BP issues...

"Maiden" - Frangelica...Ummmmm....Have that in the house, I use it in my fish recipes, especially salmon. What a fantastic taste ! I'm going to have to take a "nip" of that at my next "session" - just to see what happens, of course.

Darrison - Think I'll try the amaretto. I used to like a shot of that from time to time years ago. Hey, you're hilarious...!!!  I remember those days myself, but it was a long, long time ago...

Re: what to drink before gig?

I know a lot of singers drink water, but I find that it strips away the saliva and I end up more thirsty. I drink sugar-free lemon squash. Sugar-free because I don't want sugar on my teeth for three hours a night, & lemon is not as sickly sweet as, say, orange squash.

When I first started singing I would often drink ginger beer, but the bar maid said she could hear a difference (for the better) when I didn't, and yet honey and ginger is supposed to be good for the voice!!! I never understood that.

Re: what to drink before gig?

I've been known to have a room temp scotch before a gig.  *hangs head*

Re: what to drink before gig?

Never drink while working!
That's the rule I keep for myself.

Before a gig I drink one or two cofee (No, that's not gonna help your vocal abilities ) and from that moment on it's plain water (no ice!!!) for me. On a typical gig ( 4 * 40 minutes of singing) I drink about 3.5 to 4 liters of water.

Whatever you do: don't drink milk or too much pop soda.

Re: what to drink before gig?

it all depends on your tolerance...find that one spot between ****faced and buzzed, and play your ass off...

Re: what to drink before gig?

Woo i will surely post this information on my site.

Re: what to drink before gig?

yeah alcohol make you more alive and strong.
It was proven by experienced by some people who drunk before they proposed the love with a girl.
It makes you strong as if your the strongest man on Earth. I don't know exactly what happen to our body when we get drunk.
but one thing is for sure alcohol makes you crazy.

Re: what to drink before gig?

I do have a few vodka and slimline tonics whilst gigging but also drink 3 big bottles of water too I need a lot of water to get through a gig.

Re: what to drink before gig?

back when I was gigging, I used to have a hockey water bottle connected to my mike stand with the straw part by the mic. I could keep playing and have a sip when needed. just unscrewed the bottle to refill it but the cap and straw part stayed on the stand

the first time I played live we all took a shot of brandy before going out. it was in an arena at a beer garden. I was terrified tbh. we'd been together 5 weeks. it was friday the 13th and we played 13 songs. being a goalie, and born friday the 13th, and irish background you know I have to be superstitious...

I understand alcohol shortens the vocal chords though. is this not true?

Re: what to drink before gig?

It sounds picky, but I always drank room temperature water. Going for something cold can really constrict your chords.

Plus, if you have "tepid water" on your rider, it makes you look like a rockstar. Almost as good as "no brown M+M's" tongue

Happy gigging.

Re: what to drink before gig?

.....alcohol of any kind is out for me....it dries my vocal chords.....what works for me is room temperature water, and plenty of it.....small sips after EVERY song.....try this one, too....eat a small breakfast, then don't eat all day until after the gig...you will notice a positive difference.....and, of course....NO SMOKING OF ANYTHING......if you indulge in pot occasionally....do it AFTER the gig.....smoke of any kind dries the vocal chords......
