Topic: Mod a cable & footswitch to mimic the Mic Control function?

Is there a way to utilize the Harmony gxt's "mic control" function to hook up an external foot pedal?

Possibly make a cable to run a mic and a footswitch into the xlr in, so the pedal mimics the MP-75 "mic control" switch's function?

Why not just do what I did?

I want something where I don't have to mod the pedal itself.  Less to worry about for me..

After checking out the inner workings, any ideas?  If you need phantom power on, how would the switching work via mic control?  Simply a closed circuit on the ground prong of the xlr, then break the ground to switch from A to B?

I suspect there's more then just a switch in the mic itself. I think that the phantom power is used to powere some sort of circuit board in the mic.

The Mic-Control does indeed use the Phantom Power to control things. It doesn't exactly use the power itself, but rides along and does some sort of technical hoo-ha to figure out that the button has been pressed.

I'm not sure if you could emulate it with a pedal or not. My drop-out electrical engineering experience didn't get that far lol.

Since I wanted to be able to control both my Synth and VL2 at the same time I've been measuring the internal resistance between the pins of the MP-75 so I could create a second button. The outcomes where these:

MP-75 Wiring Diagram
(This links to an image on my facebook. Click & choose 'Open')

So basicly you shortcircuit between the 2 hot wires and the ground. If you would simply shortcircuit between 1 hot wire and the ground it wíll switch, but you'll also hear a loud pop. I guess this is because of the balanced signal. What the exact function of the 2 resistors is, I don't know. But I guess they're there for a good reason.
I've build a switch myself according to this diagram and it worked when attached to a cable between mic and flooreffect. But it won't work attached to a cable that's between 2 flooreffects. For example: I have this signalpath.
MIC --> VTSynth --> VL2
While modifying the cable between the MIC and VTSynth will work. Modifying the cable between the VTSynth and VL2 won't. The VL2 will just not register the switching in this setup.

So in the end I took apart the VL2 and directly solderd some wires on the Step&Shortcut buttons so I could connect 2 external switches to them. tongue

Sounds awesome!  I'd love to see a pic of all of this.  Also any guts shots of the switch would be so helpful.

I'm really interested in this because I would like to have the chance to use a mic control.. with other microphones than MP-75 (fantastic mic, but, I would use other ones too...)
I looked at the picture, it's clear enough.
But... what you used to create the switch and to positionate the resistances?
Have you something to suggest...?
