Topic: What's Your Favorite Style

Come on guys, where's the questions??? My favorite style? Hmmmm wink Yeah, everyone thinks I'm a metal head, but there's so much more to me. Yeah my favorite singers are from TNT, Nitro, Steelheart and Judas Priest, but I love singers of bands like Ready For the World, Duran Durna, Train, Evanescences, and solo artists like Prince, Alanis Morisette, Seal, Sting, George Michael, etc... So who do YOU like???

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

I must confess, I prefer the proggers... I often listen to this killer internet station www.progulus.com , there are a lot of great band on there with some killer singers and musicians.  Go there and check it out, you can make requests too and they have a LOT of albums in thier dbase.

Outside of voice... I quite enjoy new age, solo guitar in open tunings and solo piano.

Bands like Queensryche, Dream Theater, Helloween, TNT, Judas Priest, Yngwie w/ Mark Boals, Fates Warning w/ John Arch, KISS, Stratovarius, and Blind Guardian are a lot of what I listen to and sing. I also like to listen to more R&B people too though like Stevie Wonder, Seal, Patti LaBelle, Mariah Carey. I've been listening to Jeff Buckley a lot lately too.

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

i like singers , steve perry , sebastian bach, rob halford. the singer from dream theater, geoff tate from queensryche. jeff scott soto ,he is so underrated!! amy lee from evanesence, the heart sisters,.. singer from steel heart, . i also love the blues  and led zeppelin. i really love this site and will be asking more questions--hope you dont get bored of my questions,, i need guidance in singing better--thanks!!!!!!!

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

Great subject starter Jaime!  I love everything about Myles Kennedy's voice smile  Hands down to Jeff Buckley for his interpretation skills; I wish I would have been able to hear/see him live in concert...  I also admire Bruce Dickinson's unique vocal tone.  Amy Lee is wonderful too.

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

There can be only one.                                JORN LANDE
Can't believe no one mentioned him!  A great album is his band ARK "burn the sun" one of my fav albums of all time. This guy is a monster vocalist and is perfect live as well.  I also like the singer from the up and comming band Circus Maximus.
Also Kelly Carpenter, check out one of his videos on UTube , beyond Twilight "shadow of self"

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

My brother, Tony Harnell, speaks very highly of Jorne. He reminds me a lot of that Coveraly tonality.

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

Wow... this is a loaded question for me. All of my favorite singers are Japanese rock guys, which raises a lot of eyebrows when it comes up. Teruhiko Kobashi (GLAY), Kyosuke Himuro (BOOWY), Hyde (L'arc~en~Ciel), Toshimitsu Deyama (X-Japan), Atsushi Sakurai (Buck Tick) and Ruichi Kawamura (Luna Sea) are my heroes. I don't think these guys get near the recognition in our country that our top singers get in theirs. James LaBrie is arguably more loved in Japan than here... (Dream Theater's last DVD was at Budokan in Tokyo).

Anyway, these guys are all talented stylish singers who sing challenging stuff. In general, I'd say popular Japanese rock music has a higher bar than the chart toppers stateside. The guys in bands like Nickelback, Stone Sour, or even Franz Ferdinand and the like just aren't that outstanding in terms of sheer vocal proficiency (though capable entertainers). But if you check out the CD 'Shine' by Luna Sea, their singer is unquestionably using the same technique we get taught at Robert Lunte's 'The Vocalist Studio' for his tenor range melodies. I suggest the track 'Time Has Come' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgLVE2AjEII - wait for the chorus at 3:00 in) or 'Another' of that disc. Great, powerful, healthy singing. If you like stuff that goes even higher, check out the tracks 'Dahlia' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKq31dcspZc - wait past the distorted vox part) or 'Kurenai' by X-Japan. Crazy stuff.

These are the guys that really inspired my band's music. A wealth of info on any of these groups can be found on Wikipedia. Check out my group at www.myspace.com/twilightofficial

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

Wow alot of metal and rock bands likers in here. I actually just started loving gospel music. My favorite singer is David Phelps, if you haven't heard of him you should check out  "No more Night" his live performance on youtube. I never heard someone navigate so well through the voice and really put so much emotion into every song he does.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vX3HHtytDo   This is the song I was talking about. Its quite emotional and has some nice high notes at the end.

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

Umm Heres my top 2:
James Labrie (Dream Theater) is my god.
Jim Gillette (Nitro)

The rest are in no order:
Sabastian Bach (good Skid Row days)
Nils Rue (Pagans Mind)
Prince (the one and only)
Russell Allan (Symphony X)
Jonas Heidgert (DragonLand)
Fabio Lione (Rhapsody)

Lee Muria, I noticed you've got some Japanese dudes there. If you like them, you might like this Korean singer named Shin Hae Chul. He was a member of a Korean power metal band called N-EX-T.

Here is a music video and a live performance of a great metal song (just a little cheezy, but they've got nothing on the Sex Machineguns)

Hey thanks for that link Vox_Rocks...That guy sounds pretty good....i think that japanese, chinese, korean are beautiful languages to sing in...even though they are very different languages. Some languages just dont sound nice...like French, German, Russian etc.... English is ok tongue but if i could speak Japanese, i would sing japanese.

Hey Jaime, i was looking at some more recent pics of Jim yesterday, and it blows my mind how big that guy is now...lol...i definitely wouldnt pick a fight with him....its funny that hes so muscley and is a fighting champion, yet he has one of the biggest ranges in the world and can sing higher than most women....haha! Scary stuff
He looked much cooler in his glam days though (please dont tell him i said that)....lol...wouldnt want him to hunt me down and kill me.

Also, im really looking forward to James's new stuff! Personally i think James' stuff is better than recent DT stuff.... hes a brilliant song writer and i dont see why he doesnt have more input into DT....becos octavarium sucks tongue they need to do better...
Well if you speak to James and hes ever looking for a rock/metal vocalist for some project, then give him my email address haha!

It sounds like you've heard a wide range of music...
Do you know any good Chinese rock acts? I know a ton of Japanese bands and a few good Korean ones, but I have yet to hear any Chinese music that wasn't terribly uninspired '80s lounge pop blaring in some Dim Sum place. Given China's stature as the oldest-surviving culture it doesn't seem likely that that's all there is. Let me know... thanks!

Oh yeah, and I agree... Octavarium was pretty boring. I haven't really liked any new Dream Theater since Metropolis, Pt. 2 aside from a few of the tracks on Train of Thought. My personal favorite is Awake (esp. Caught in a Web and Space Dye Vest).

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

My style of music goes from Alanis Morrisette, to Sarah Mclachlan (Who I saw in concert at Key Arena- MAN!! What a voice!) To Evanescence, to Brian Adams, Lorenna McKennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole,Nickelback, Nine Inch Nails, Erasure, Hard Rock, anything pretty much but country. The band I'm in right now has more of a almost hard rock/rock sound.

To be honest, the only chinese stuff i have listened to is like you said '80s pop lounge stuff' and also some chinese folk music which is pretty good. I havent heard of any rock or metal bands from china though... Just Japan and Korea really.
Yeh Awake and Images and Words are the best....i can never decide between the 2. I thought Train of thought was pretty good to, but not very DT...
When i practice my singing, its mainly to Images and words, awake, scenes from a memory, and james labries old glam band WinterRose...

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

Looks like I'm going to be alone in my musical theatre love.  Though I do dabble in a bit of power metal, cheesier the better, stuff like stratovarius.  I can't really name too many bands, all i have to go from is a cd my friend made me.  Musical theatre wise I dig Raul Esparza, Jason Robert Brown, Mandy Patinkin, Michael Arden, Will Chase, and Stephen Pasquale to name a few.

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

Stratovarius is my favorite power metal band. Check out Rhapsody, Edguy, Hammerfall, Blind Guardian, and Helloween (especially the 2 Keeper of the seven keys albums) if you haven't already.

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

I like theater stuff also smile

I'll definitely have to go check those out.  I've been on a metal kick lately and only having one cd is driving me crazy.

Good! I am not alone here! tongue

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

... I was recently introduced to Stratovarius by a new student from Sweden... Agreed, this guy has definately chopped on his technique.   Great singer!   What is it about the Scandinavians and Northern Europe and great metal vocals?   They just seem to be abundant from that region.

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

Yeh Timo Kotipelto has a brilliant voice...its a bit odd sounding...lol...which is good cos you can pick his voice out of a million singers easily.
I dont like Stratovarius that much though, they have about 3 great songs per album and the rest is just boring. I mean i love my prog, but they just drag on with boring riffs.

Timo's project 'Kotipelto' on the other hand is amazing....its all focused on melody hooks.... I recommend it to everyone.

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

Yeah I actually like his solo stuff more than Stratovarius in most cases, even though I think the 2 Elements albums are the best power metal CDs out there.

Forgot to mention Kamelot as a band to check out; Khan has got an amazing voice.

Re: What's Your Favorite Style

Europe seems to spawn amazing singers and bands live.....
Most of the progressive metal/powermetal scene really has amazing singers, more so then the trendy stuff out their on the main labels I find...
and the songwriting is amazing,go listen to some of this stuff a band called Evergrey, kinda reminds me of the Skinard version of heavy metal....the writing is great.....tons of emotion

Pasty, and those of you that like theater, you might want to check out my new rendition of "Gethsemane" from Jesus Christ superstar, its on www.myspace.com/tvsvox ...  It was inspired by Ian Gillan, who did a version of this back in the 70s, very classic...  Enjoy vox brethren... btw, this was tracked at www.synergynw.com and we used the new TC-Helicon doubler... what a sweet outboard processor that is... Another one of my students, Sean Walker, will be tracking his project with the TCH doubler next Tuesday...
