Topic: Problems with VoiceWorks Plus

I am having two problems with the TC-Helicon VoiceWorks Plus.  Any help would be appreciated.

1. When using a preset that creates harmonies based on a MIDI chord, sometimes I get accurate harmonies and sometimes I get random harmony notes unrelated to the chord or key.  This happens using the exact same preset, with the exact same Sonar MIDI track or keyboard chords.  I am filtering out program change messages.  I am feeding the original vocal from a Roland VS-1680, and then supplying the MIDI chords either from a Sonar sequence (with only one track for the vocal and no controller messages) or by holding chords on a MIDI keyboard.  Note that I can see the MIDI input and vocal input registering on the VoiceWorks Plus.  Note also that this can work and then not work within a 15-minute period.

2.  My old Digitech Vocalist would supply harmony notes when I held down a MIDI chord and then go silent when I released the notes.  That was great for adding harmonies only in specific places.  With the VoiceWorks Plus, after I release the chord, I continue to get harmonies based on the last chord I input which is annoying since I have to mute and unmute the track quickly.

More info:  making the two SW updates recommend by TC did not resolve the problem.  Still need help.  Thanks, --Konrad

Re: Problems with VoiceWorks Plus

when using direct midi, first make sure the keyboard has no delay or vibrato switched, if musical rather than midi keyboard check the voice works main paramitters for things like compensation which should be off...try setting the harmonies to pich or timing at 0 rather than loose or delayed,
make your atk 0 and rel short, also pitch controls and thickening should be off to begin with,
check the individuel voices are 0 and not trying to change the input note,
basicly return to a blank canvas if poss ...smooth 0 portmento 0 and so on, mine is always set for midi and it is a differant universe to the non midi majority.  good luck.

Re: Problems with VoiceWorks Plus

Thanks for replying.  That helps.  I also uncovered some other things:

1.  There is a latch function that is ON by default in most presets.  This was not documented in the original manual.  I usually want this set to OFF so when I release notes on the MIDI keyboard or via sequencer, the harmony voices will go off instead of continuing to sing the last notes sent.
2.  For some reason, master pitch in the unit was not set to A=440: it was A=429.  This was making things out of tune.
3.  I did not originally understand the Channel=1 v Channel=4, and that was confusing the issue.  Basically, this global parameter allows you to transmit one MIDI channel or 4 separate MIDI channels, which is handy once you know how it works.
4.  Since correction is an insert effect, I need to have dry voice ON to use correction, which was confusing at first since I only want the corrected voice in the output.  I did not understand the architecture at first.

The initial manual was too sketchy and did not explain many of the parameters.  I'm sure this will get better with time.

Thanks again for taking time to help.  Your suggestions are all valuable.

Re: Problems with VoiceWorks Plus

I totaly agree with your comments regarding sketchy manual!!
and feel tc helicon would do well to remedy this oversight,as there seams to be many secondhand/almost new items available on the internet,...i can only assume from people unable to master the thousands of paramitters availabe due to lack of foolproof instructions, and basic step by step guides to a solid foundation/or jump off point.
(jump off point reffered to, is not the suicidel one which can be attained by the torture induced by fiddling with this equipment !!)

Re: Problems with VoiceWorks Plus

I am also going nuts with the faulty harmonies: I have used the VoicePrism for years, always in Chord Mode, and I play live MIDI tracks through MOTU's Digital Performer on my MAC, sent to a Roland XV 5050 to produce the sound.  MIDI channel 1 is dedicated to the chord data, sent to the VoicePrism (and now the VoiceWorks plus).  All I had to do in the past was type in the chord name (ex. C= "C-2,", G= G-2, etc.-- Minor or 7th etc chords had to have all the notes in the chord entered, and I have about 150 songs set up like this over the years, and they all work without a hitch (on the VoicePrism).
Now, with the VoiceWorks, set on a factory CHORD Mode preset (like 0.2, Barbershop Trio), some songs work perfectly, others don't work at all, and don't recognize any of the chords -- and all are made EXACTLY the SAME!!  I talked to BEN at TCHelicon, and he said to switch to NOTES mode--I couldn't  get ANY harmony sound at all, and no chord changes.

I would appreciate any help at all-- Thanks. Bob Widmeyer.

Re: Problems with VoiceWorks Plus

Faulty harmonies? And switching to Notes mode made no sound at all?? Something's wrong here for sure. Please email me your midifiles.

Re: Problems with VoiceWorks Plus

Just another note on this - can you pls check in Setup menu U2 which chord mode you are using? This can be changed from Improvise to Classic and this should help.
