Topic: Voice Live 2 - Using USB for Audio with a DAW

Hi, I have just invested in a Voice Live 2 after reading up on the features and new processing power capabilities that this new Voice Live 2 version possesses.. However the ultimate deciding factor that sold me and made me decide to invest in it, was the mentioning in the YouTube video around 1 minute 10 seconds into the video (see link below), that the Voice Live 2 (being connected to the laptop via USB) was being used as an insert effect, having the lead vocal and a guitar track being sent to the Voice Live 2 via USB for vocal processing and adding effects and then being sent back via the USB to the DAW running on the laptop.

My question is how do I perform this very same setup to use the Voice Live 2 as an insert processor as shown in the TC Helicon YouTube video post (see link below):-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbWqgr6O … tube_gdata

I'm using Logic Studio 9 on a MacBook Pro 17" 'unibody' with 8GB RAM and naturally the Voice Live 2. When attempting this I was unable to identify the Voice Live 2 as any insert/plugin or any device that could be chosen to route and send vocal audio to and back from, I only seem able to choose it at the moment as the complete Stereo Input and output via Logic 9's Main Input/Output Audio Preferences in which I particularly did not want to send Logic 9's entire stereo output to..

In addition to this, if I plug in my Apogee Duet in the seperate Firewire port, I seem unable to receive audio using a different configuration of having the Voice Live 2 as the Stereo input when setting Logic 9 main Audio In as 'Voice Live' and Logic 9 main Audio Out as the Duet, I can hear the Logic tracks through the Duet but no Voice Live 2 is present?

What am I doing wrong with these two configurations? The TC Helicon YouTube video again (Ref. approx 1 minute 10 seconds into video):-

Re: Voice Live 2 - Using USB for Audio with a DAW

Are you using an Asio-driver for the VL2. Since there is no specific Asiodriver for the VL2, you could use the lAsio4all driver
I tried to use it to work with VL2 in Cubase 5. C5 will recognise the VL2, but I am yet to figure out how to work with C5 using my Yamaha 01X as my interface and VL2 as an effect...

Re: Voice Live 2 - Using USB for Audio with a DAW

Hiya,

Are you using the latest build? (version 1.1.00). This specific ability is part of the new software version.

Best wishes,

Joey

Re: Voice Live 2 - Using USB for Audio with a DAW

Thanks for the heads-up Joey. I haven't tried it after updating yet. Will do so somewhere this week.
Is there any news on specific drivers for the VL2 yet?

Re: Voice Live 2 - Using USB for Audio with a DAW

Hiya Mike,

My pleasure, hope it fixes it for you smile. As for the drivers, at the moment there is no further news on specific drivers for the VoiceLive 2. Asio4All does seem to do the trick very well in the mean time though.

Best,

Joey

Re: Voice Live 2 - Using USB for Audio with a DAW

Hi!
I want to share a problem. I have very low input signal to any DAW which I try useing USB. I'm using ASIO4ALL. I turned up the gain of VL2, but for accurate levels in the DAW it starts clipping. I tried with two different microphones, two different cables, three DAW (Cubase, Kristal, Ableton Live), but again I need to turn the gain of the record with 14 DB up, to be OK. The sound through the headphones out is normal.

Please help! smile

Hi!
I cannot use Asio4All driver with  my VoiceLive2 as they incorrectly work with my sound card EMU 1820M. I see only 2 inputs from 8. This drivers do not work correctly with my card. What should I do now? Please help!

Hiya,

Although we reccomend ASIO4ALL as a solution we unfortunately cannot support it. Have you tried posting this question on the ASIO4ALL forum?

Best wishes,

Joey

Hiya Jan,

Sorry you weren't able to use Asio4all. I have read elsewhere that there are issues with some soundcards and I do believe your card was one of them. It is worth browsing their forum for suggestions on how to fix this.

At this point we have no plans to develop drivers specifically for the VoiceLive 2. The beauty of Asio4all and others like it is the fact that you can use many different combinations of devices to expand your recording options without relying on one manufacturer or driver. If using a pc and a specific driver for VoiceLive 2 you would have to "switch" the asio driver to use the different devices as opposed to having them all available at one time.

Here are some alternatives to Asio4all that you might want to try:

Best of luck - let us know how you get on with this.

Hi...

I had the same problem with ©Cubase and finally found the right way to use it.
I used VoiceLive2 on a Mac/OSX/LogicPro and finally found my misanderstanding !

Here is a (more detailled and ©Cubase designed) tutorial for using the VoiceLive2 unit as an External FX Unit...

Hope it may help someone.

Re: Voice Live 2 - Using USB for Audio with a DAW

I used the voice live 2 on a bunch of gig’s in the 4 to 800 seat capability and observed that the noise stage from on stage seems to bleed into the mic and makes it troublesome to sing without it crackling or slicing out. I had to work with the petal and sort of push the air from my voice to cease it from chopping out however the breaking apart remains to be very exhausting to overcome. I turned the gate off and that appeared to work better. Is there any other adjustment I would be capable of try for the situation. I still haven’t up graded the software program so I don’t know if that may help also?

Hiya tomglennon39,

I would seriously recommend you update your software via the VoiceSupport application to version 1.2.01.

We are constantly improving, refining and adding new features to this product and there have been several updates since release that help directly with the issues you are currently facing.

If you are still experiencing issues after performing the update please get in touch with TC-Helicon's support team via the following link:

Your english is fine, really! Where is the pdf? The link is broken or empty..
I cannot get this to work with Logic and I'm looking for anything to add to what I can't figure out.
Can someone shed some light on this, I'm about to forget the whole thing out of frustration and lack of support.
The only posts I read about, are posts that people can't figure out the procedure. If anyone has it figured out, they sure don't seem to post the big secret.

Perhaps support should be a little more specific with this? I keep reading, but fail to find answers..
I don't think I'm alone here.  sad

Re: Voice Live 2 - Using USB for Audio with a DAW

Hiya Lou,

Although the following is using Logic 8 I hope it is still of use to you. This is a guide that was recently made by Tom Lang in an effort to use VoiceLive 2 as an insert in Logic:

Products used: Logic Express 8, VoiceLive 2 build 68, Macbook/Intel dual core, OS X 10.5.8

I have 3 Logic tracks: mono guitar, mono vocal, and VoiceLive(stereo)
VoiceLive Setup\I/O\Digital In set to USB:Vox L/Inst R

You have to define the Mac’s audio properties using the Audio/MIDI setup screen.  The key is using an Aggregate device which is the Mac’s way of using multiple audio devices simultaneously.

Set the Logic Core Audio to the Aggregate device.

The key is to use the Mac’s onboard soundcard to monitor everything and the VoiceLive 2 to do the insert processing. You can plug your headphones into the Mac or just use the speakers quietly.

Define mono sends from the guitar and vocal track to the Out device connected to VoiceLive 2. Because the Aggregate device doesn’t show device names very well and it’ll swap them (onboard and VL2) around when you power off or disconnect VoiceLive 2, you may have to experiment to find which Out is which device. I found this the most frustrating after a song save, power down/up cycle. I’m not a Mac/Logic expert so there is likely a way around this I haven’t found.

Set the Input to the VoiceLive 2 track to stereo and it’s device designation (e.g. Input 3-4). Arm the track (highlight R). On initiating playback, you should hear the vocal with processing applied.

More notes: Set the Lead Mute in VoiceLive 2  Setup\I/O\ to On. Also do this for the guitar and make sure the Guitar FX button is off.

You may need to set VoiceLive 2 as the master clock in Audio\MIDI setup depending on your power up and playback sequence.

The goal of this is to have a 100% wet harmony/reverb etc track you can mix in with the existing vocal track. If you want to use the Transducer or Hardtune effects, you will be creating a track that replaces the vocal track.

Really hope this helps. Please get back to me and let me know how you get on.

Best wishes,

Joey

Re: Voice Live 2 - Using USB for Audio with a DAW

i cant for the life of me figure this out.... please help...

i'm using ableton live with a motu traveller, and my voicelive touch.
just trying to use voicelive as an Effects processor.. so basically i want to send acapellas or whatever out of ableton thru my voicelive touch, and back into ableton..

i've setup an agreggate device for my audio input (built in/outs, voicelive ins/outs, motu 14 ins/outs), and my motu as the audio output

what am i doing wrong?

Re: Voice Live 2 - Using USB for Audio with a DAW

Hi missfunkkyflyy,

You may find it easier to just run things analog via your Traveler. Send the dry vocal track out via one of the Traveler's outs, then make a new Stereo track with 2 of the Traveler's inputs as the source and record the result.

There will be a bit of latency when the harmonies/effects are recorded back (there would be if it were digital too) so you'll need to nudge the harmony/effect track to line up with the original dry vocal.

Aggregate devices can get poopy pretty quickly. You can wrestle with them and get it to work, but analog is usually a lot faster.

Let me know if that helps.

Cheers,
Craig
