Topic: VoiceLive 2 via USB with Logic 9 (again)

Hi,

maybe there's an experienced user among you guys who could help me.
The USB issue is still a riddle to me - as I'm a newbie to my DAW (which is Logic 9) there are still sooooo many secrets.
Can my VoiceLive 2 actually be used as an insert without any other cables? Just the good old USB-cable? I've got a fire wire interface (Saffire Pro 24 DSP ) with a decent mic preamp to record my vocals into Logic. The VoiceLive however is connected directly to my mac, not to the interface (no USB here, of course).
I'm aware that the VoiceLive won't actually be shown as a AU-Plugin, so there's no access to it below "Inserts", allright?
In the Logic Audio Options the interface is chosen as the input- and output-device. Is that correct or do I have to choose the VoiceLive as input??
One audio track in Logic contains the vocals, no processing so far. In the channel strip of the vocals I chose a bus (below "Sends"), which also caused a new Aux-Channel to appear. Another track contains MIDI-notes that could be used to control the harmonies.
How do I proceed from here? I might not have fully understood what a bus does besides linking several tracks to the same effects.
I'd appreciate any help from someone who has actually managed that setup in Logic!
Thanks!

Re: VoiceLive 2 via USB with Logic 9 (again)

Hiya Andrusch,

While I am not personally familiar with Logic - have you read the addendum to the VoiceLive 2 manual that is available from the TC-Helicon website via this link?:

http://www.tc-helicon.com/media/Addendum.pdf

There is a section in this document that describes how to set up the VoiceLive 2 as an insert effect in your DAW. Let me know if this helps.

Best wishes,

Joey

Re: VoiceLive 2 via USB with Logic 9 (again)

Thanks for the reply, Joey. I've got specific questions about the setup in Logic, so I guess I'm looking for a tutorial.
The manual answers these questions only very briefly, it can't cover all the DAWs on the market, I fully understand that.
If I manage to find out by myelf, I might come up with a tut to tell the world!

Re: VoiceLive 2 via USB with Logic 9 (again)

Hiya Andrusch,

I think the best thing to do would be to get in touch with TC-Helicon's support team:-

www.tc-helicon.com/support.asp

They'll be able to help you out with specifics much better than I can in this area smile.

Let me know how you get on! Any videos you make on the subject would be greatly appreciated! They're always welcome.

Best wishes,

Joey

Re: VoiceLive 2 via USB with Logic 9 (again)

I've setup my Voicelive2 with Logic Pro
(i've used it as an external FX)
What are your needs ?

Re: VoiceLive 2 via USB with Logic 9 (again)

This is a very old thread, but I too am using Logic 9. I have watched all of the Videos, (2) read the addendum notes and as the first poster said, all DAWs are different. There is not enough information to explain the procedure of using VL2 as an insert. Sorry, but it is all to brief.

I feel like such a dweeb! Is there anyone who uses Logic that is willing to take on the chore of explaining (a,b,c) of accomplishing this hidden and well kept secret! smile Sorry, I can do quite a bit in my daw and I am no newb, but this one aspect of VL2 sure makes me feel like one. Thanks..

Re: VoiceLive 2 via USB with Logic 9 (again)

Hiya Lou,

I posted this on a separate thread also but though I would put it here too in an effort to help smile.

Although the following is using Logic 8 I hope it is still of use to you. This is a guide that was recently made by Tom Lang in an effort to use VoiceLive 2 as an insert in Logic:

Products used: Logic Express 8, VoiceLive 2 build 68, Macbook/Intel dual core, OS X 10.5.8

I have 3 Logic tracks: mono guitar, mono vocal, and VoiceLive(stereo)
VoiceLive Setup\I/O\Digital In set to USB:Vox L/Inst R

You have to define the Mac’s audio properties using the Audio/MIDI setup screen.  The key is using an Aggregate device which is the Mac’s way of using multiple audio devices simultaneously.

Set the Logic Core Audio to the Aggregate device.

The key is to use the Mac’s onboard soundcard to monitor everything and the VoiceLive 2 to do the insert processing. You can plug your headphones into the Mac or just use the speakers quietly.

Define mono sends from the guitar and vocal track to the Out device connected to VoiceLive 2. Because the Aggregate device doesn’t show device names very well and it’ll swap them (onboard and VL2) around when you power off or disconnect VoiceLive 2, you may have to experiment to find which Out is which device. I found this the most frustrating after a song save, power down/up cycle. I’m not a Mac/Logic expert so there is likely a way around this I haven’t found.

Set the Input to the VoiceLive 2 track to stereo and it’s device designation (e.g. Input 3-4). Arm the track (highlight R). On initiating playback, you should hear the vocal with processing applied.

More notes: Set the Lead Mute in VoiceLive 2  Setup\I/O\ to On. Also do this for the guitar and make sure the Guitar FX button is off.

You may need to set VoiceLive 2 as the master clock in Audio\MIDI setup depending on your power up and playback sequence.

The goal of this is to have a 100% wet harmony/reverb etc track you can mix in with the existing vocal track. If you want to use the Transducer or Hardtune effects, you will be creating a track that replaces the vocal track.

Really hope this helps. Please get back to me and let me know how you get on.

Best wishes,

Joey

Re: VoiceLive 2 via USB with Logic 9 (again)

Joey,
Currently waiting for a new keyboard to arrive. I have no useable tracks or midi to apply to the VL2.
Will post back after the dust settles. Thank you for your concern.. smile

Re: VoiceLive 2 via USB with Logic 9 (again)

I tried this, and it didn't work for me. I am wondering if it worked for any of you guys. I already contacted TC-Helicon ( for the second time ) and it has been quite a while now... I've gotten two e mails saying they'll get back at me. Great product, but poor costumer service : (

New board came in, had it for 2 weeks and had to return it, OS problems.
Waiting for replacement..  (I'm getting to old for this s**t)
Sorry for that but everything that can go wrong, always seems to ..  hmm
