Topic: The right moment to change the voice registers

HI!

I was wondering if someone can help me to understand where is the best way to change the voice from one register to another.
There is an area of mix in my voice of 1 octave (G to G) where I can do the change. Of course naturally, when singing softly the change is lower, and when sing louder the change is in the higher notes naturally. (like in messa di voce)

But still difficult to me to decide where to make the change most of the times by will. And what to practice.

Depending on the compression, support seems to be a constant changing matter though the songs. It's driving me crazy to prepare my set of songs, because there are a lot of different changes between the registers. It's demanding a lot of concentration and technic to prepare this.

I was wondering if you have the same problems approaching your songs. Apparently many singers don't think so much about this, and their voice normally changes around the same place in the scale.

I'm overwhelmed by the options. For example, should I start controlling a soft-mode, with a lower change a thousand times, or should I let my voice get louder (concert level) and practice the higher mix that I will probably use.

So practice a low-soft-change, or a louder-high-change? If I get used to sing the songs softly, will my voice work easier later in the louder mix? Or the difference in the coordination will make a mess later? So sing always concert level

Have you ever choose between this strategies?

Thanks for any thought!

Thanks for your sharing about high and low pitch.I visited here first time and by reading it I also want to change my voice in different nodes and pitch.

Re: The right moment to change the voice registers

Hi

I'm not sure what style of singing you do but, as you know, there are many approaches to singing.

What I feel is that you are thinking much too technically about your voice and your songs.  I think you may do better to try to approach this 'problem' from a different angle, because then I think you'll find you don't have a problem.

Here is a question I ask all my singers....  What do you think a singer's main job is?

Answer:  To tell a story.

If you are totally immersed what you are singing about, in telling your story through the music, you will not need to consciously think about technique.  In fact, when performing, you should never be thinking about technique but rather about the music and about communicating through music to your audience.

Honestly, I don't think there is anything more boring than a musician striving for technical perfection in performance.

Technique is for the practice room.  If you are doing it right, your technique then translates unconsciously into your songs and you will never sing a song twice in the same way.  Let the changes in register happen by themselves, dictated by your feelings while singing the music.

Practice all the levels of change in your voice as separate technical work.

Then when you sing, just sing.  Tell us your story, that's what we want to hear.

Let me know if that makes any difference.
