Topic: Singing Volume Problem ?!

Hello, i'm new to this forum i'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong thread but here it is. I sing in this begginers alternative rock band and everyone in it keeps telling me "sing louder sing louder I can't hear the voice" while I feel like if I push it more it will feel forced, even when i'm screaming similar to "three days grace in its all over" it sounds.. low as in not enough volume comparing to the bass player who covers me completly when he sings, talk. The mixer volumes are close to red, I keep the microphone close straight I dont cover the top. I'm clueless... is this a problem ? is there any solution to it exercises or anything ? am I just not fit for it ? ... smile any pin points would help TY.

PS: I think this topic was suited for the performance thread... sorryy ..

Re: Singing Volume Problem ?!

Well, if you can't turn your mix volume up, maybe you can turn his down. smile

Seriously, there are two places to look. The first is in how you produce your tone; any voice can be made optimal with proper technique. A voice coach is the fastest and most reliable way to proceed.

The other place to look is at your gear and how you use it. Different mics have different requirements for how you work with them. Some work best very close, some require that you be very precisely in front of the mic. You can also get your voice separated from his in other ways -- altering aspects of the mix, for example (pan, EQ especially).

Your instincts are good though about screaming to be heard. Done improperly, that can really do a number on your voice.

Good luck and have fun!

Hi Mintrubber,

Father John has it right on. Working WITH your band to make the mix sound great takes some ego massaging sometimes. wink

Louder does not sound better.. it just sounds, well, louder. Having each member of the band work on their personal levels/tones to fit in with the overall sound of the group goes a long way to making any project sound slick and professional.

Try setting your mic volume first, then dial in the rest of the band to fit under the level of that vocal.

Cheers,
Craig

Re: Singing Volume Problem ?!

Hi Mintrubber,

I'm new here too, but just like you I sing in a rock band.I just get the TC HL2 so I haven't jedi skills with that yet. However I already had other pedal and and for a long time I had the same problem.

I finaly discover what the problem is: The Compressor. As you know when the compressor be activated it tries normalize the peaks high and low volumes. If you using a huge ammount of compressor your voice volume will be lowered proportionally to the volume you are vocalizing.

Additionaly rock bands has a bad habit to play louder in small studio rooms, it makes you microphone capture more than your voice and will force down your volume.

As Father John said, good gear is also part of the magic.

Keep Rocking,
