Topic: Processing Recorded Vocals

I am particularly interested in this feature, but had some questions:

1) Does this feature only work with USB, or could the SPDIF also work?  I don't have good luck getting USB devices to work in ASIO with my MOTU 896mk3 (and I have tried ASIOAll).  I would rather not use the USB for audio if possible, but would love the ability to record dry vocals and then process them later.

2) If #1 is possible, how would the setup work exactly?  In fact, I can't find any good resource on how to use this feature of the unit (in either instruction manuals).  Only the video by Lang mentions it in brief.  It would be great to see more detailed information (or a video) on exactly how this can be done.

Thanks!
Brandon

Re: Processing Recorded Vocals

Hi Brandon,

Spdif is definitely an option. In fact, you may find it simpler since you won't have to create/setup the Rack as an audio device and can just send it the dry vocals. If you just want processed vox back, just turn on Lead Mute in the Setup menu.

Check out the series of VL-Rack vids I made. I'm pretty sure I cover the Lead ON/Off stuff in the Aux Send video. It talks about XLR in/out, but it applies to SPDIF too as long as you select SPDIF from the output menu.

Hope that helps!

Re: Processing Recorded Vocals

Craig,

I've never used a harmonizer or auto tune effect before but I do understand that if I want to use the auto tune feature in the studio on a pre-recorded vocal I will have to send the vocal to the unit and then send the corrected vocal back to the recorder and record it onto another track (can't effects loop with pitch correction).  I would rather not have multiple conversions going on when doing this.  Can I use S/PDIF out of my recorder and into the VL-rack and then use the S/PDIF out of the VL-rack to send the corrected vocal back to the recorder?  Along those same lines can I send the already recorded vocal into the VL-rack via S/PDIF and get the harmonies back digitally via S/PDIF with the lead vocal muted?  Keeping the AD/DA conversions to a minimum would be the key.  I'm not recording with a typical computer DAW like most people (using an older Tascam SX-1) so using the USB feature isn't possible.

BTW, the videos are great.  Can't wait to pick this unit up.

Re: Processing Recorded Vocals

Hi Soulville,

Yep that's totally do-able. Set input and output to SPDIF in the I/O menu and when you're doing the Harmony passes, set Lead Mute to ON.

You'll stay in the digital domain that way and not have any AD/DA for the processing.

Cheers,
Craig
