Topic: Where to practice??? Power metal vocals.

I'm a power metal singer (or at least I'd like to be) and I have a hard time finding places to practice.  I live at home with my parents, and if they're home, which is often, they get really bothered by my practicing singing because it is so loud.  I either practice with my piano, which is in a large airy hallway which amplifies sound such that it is heard clearly throughout the house, or with my guitar in my room. Either way they seem to be able to clearly hear me.  Normally I'd say tough, but I'm very self conscious about my singing and basically never practice if they're home.  Sometimes i just practice while driving (which probably isnt safe).  Can anyone suggest alternatives places to practice or ways to practice in my room without bothering everyone?  Thanks!

Re: Where to practice??? Power metal vocals.

talk to your parents about what you want to accomplish and need to practice and come to a compromise of time, soundproof your room, go for walks with headphones or join a band with rehearsal space/rent some space. we pay 17/hr for the place we rehearse.

Re: Where to practice??? Power metal vocals.

Here's a crazy idea.  What if you treat your parents like owners of a rehearsal space and set up rehearsal times and even pay them to be able to rehearse at home at those times?  Because they love you they may give you a killer rate like $1/hour! You would have to work out a schedule that works for everyone, and then stick to it.  This could mean you will no longer be able to practice whenever inspiration hits you (at 3 am or otherwise!).  Your willingness to treat this in a business-like way will reveal your commitment as a professional performer.  You probably want to rehearse several times a week for several hours each time.  Many young musicians who live with their parents face the same struggle, but your success as a musician is dependent on regular, productive rehearsals, so your dilemma must be solved.  Some schools or music academies may let you use their rehearsal spaces.  Also, a lot of churches have halls that are unused during the week, and may let musicians practice there (the secretary who works in the office or others who may be in the building may take offense to any explicit lyrics, though..).  Good luck!!
