Topic: Sonar and VL2 - recording just harmonies

Hi,

I have been using Sonar 7 for a while but just as a digital version of an analog recorder, and I am new to the Voice Live 2, so bear with me.

I am using ASO4All and have recorded my instruments on Track 1. The input on track 1 is stereo aso4all V2 Voicelive 2 1. I have track 1 panned hard right.

I recorded my lead vocal on Track 2. The input on track 2 is stereo aso4all V2 Voicelive 2 1. I have track 2 panned hard left. So far so good.

I now want to process the instruments and vocal through the VL2 while recording my harmony alone on track 3.

In the VL2 setup page I have the I/O set for Output stereo
Digital In USB: VOX L/ Inst R
Digital Out Vocal & Guitar
Lead Mute On
Output Level Range Mic

When I arm track 3 and play track 1 & 2 Track 1 is not recorded onto track 3 but track 2 is. I have tried everything I can think of but I cannot seem to find out how to not record track 2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

James

Hi James,

I asked a question about your setup on Facebook. If you'd like to continue the chat here, it might be advantageous since there's so many folks on the forum who are great at helping solve problems.

Feel free to respond to my FB question here or there, whichever you like.

TC-Helicon Craig:

Hi James. Just to clarify, you're wanting to use the guitar track to guide the harmonies and just want to return the processed voices, without the lead vocal?

Craig,

Yes, that's correct. I have tried using the asio4all driver withy the VL2 driving, and have not been successful. Should I disconnect the USB and run off my Line 6 UX2, or via s/pdif?

Re: Sonar and VL2 - recording just harmonies

Hi James,

Was your Asio4All driver able to see the VL2 at all?

Re: Sonar and VL2 - recording just harmonies

Only when I disconnect my Line 6 UX2, then it shows the VL2.

Re: Sonar and VL2 - recording just harmonies

Are you on a Mac?

Re: Sonar and VL2 - recording just harmonies

No, A PC, running Sonar 7.5

Re: Sonar and VL2 - recording just harmonies

Hi James,

After re-reading your question I think I've got it sorted. The I/O of the VL2 is limited to L+R. You can't process the lead vocal, guitar, and generate harmonies, then output them all separately.

You'll need to send your Lead Vocal out by itself and then return the whatever effects, minus harmony, that you want to apply to the lead.

Then, do another pass, sending just guitar and processing the guitar effects and return to a new track.

Finally, do a third pass with lead mute on to generate the harmonies and return them to a 3rd track. You'll need to find a way to output your guitar track and plug it into the guitar IN on the VL2. Make sure to set NaturalPlay to AUTO INPUT SENSE or GUITAR.

Does that make sense?

I'm trying to picture the setup in my head...

Cheers,
Craig

Hi Craig,

You said

I did. I now have two tracks in Sonar. Track 1 is my completed, mixed down instrument tracks. Track two is my lead vocal with effects.

As I said earlier, I have the instrument track complete

I have the VL2 connected to my Line 6 UX2 via s/pid (the UX2 only has an out). But I am still getting the lead vocal with the harmony. Any suggestions?

BTW I sent you an email

James
