Topic: Which microphone has the best quality?

Hee everyone,

I am looking for a nice condensator microphone but I have no idea which is the best.
I really want to have an amazing sound quality for my voice and also my guitar. These are my options:

Rode NT 2 A
Sennheiser MK 4
Shure SM 27
AKG C 214
MXL V 89 (which is more expensive)

I also saw this microphone (Neumann TLM 102 NI Kit) which is way more expensive but is that worth the money or are the other mics good enough?

Please can you help me out with choosing the best mic. I have a Tascam US 144 as audio interface.

Thanks,
Tim

Re: Which microphone has the best quality?

Hi godyourule,

That's a tricky question. There are so many variables in choosing a mic. The most important to me are price and how it sounds. The price is easy, since you'll know your budget, but the sound is completely subjective. What sounds amazing to one person could be bad to another.

If you only have the budget for one mic right now, I'd go with something that's the most neutral that you can find, so that you can use it on a wide variety of voices/guitars.

Maybe some hunting around on review sites will get you closer to picking the right mic for your setup.

The question about the Neumann is pretty easy I think. If you're at a point where you specifically have heard one and just have to have it for your studio, then sure it's worth the money. Is it worth it just for the name? Absolutely not. You're definitely paying for quality, but also paying for the brand name too. There are other mics on the market that perform very well for much less.

Cheers,
Craig
