Topic: White Noise

When using the VoiceLive 2 with a Bose L1 model 2 with ToneMatch the XLR output is very noisy. It emits a very pronounced "white noise" sound. Any ideas on how to minimize that? Should I use the other outputs?

Re: White Noise

Hi petecalgaro,

To me, that sounds like one of two things.

1. One or more of your gains, either on the VoiceLive 2 or the PA is set too low, forcing you to turn up outputs/inputs to compensate. Make sure you've used the Set Mic Gain feature on the VL2 and that the overall output level isn't turned down. Then, make sure you've turned up the channel strip on your mixer so that the level coming from the VL2 is strong. Lastly, turn up the output gain of the PA.

2. Perhaps you have an effect, like transducer, turned on? Some of the effects blocks do introduce EQ's that can sound like "hiss" when turned up.

If neither of those things help, let me know and we'll investigate further.

Cheers,
Craig

Re: White Noise

The master output of the VL2 is at 75%. The more I turn it up, the louder the hiss gets. the only way to turn down the hiss is to turn the master output really low. Would the other outputs be quieter than the XLR output?

Re: White Noise

Hi petecalgaro,

The TRS outputs are exactly the same as the XLR. They're physically wired together. You won't notice any difference there.

It does sound like gain staging to me. We did add a setting for boosting output levels a couple of firmware updates ago. Try going into Setup --> I/O and change the Output Level Range. We've got several settings in there that offer various amounts of boost to the output. See if there's one in there that helps. Also, pay close attention to how much hiss is present in the Bose with any other, or no, devices connected. That way, you can narrow down how much the VL2 is actually creating by itself vs how much the system as a whole is producing.

Re: White Noise

The output level range helped immensely. The whole unit is much quieter. I will be using this for my gig on Saturday. Thanks for the help.

Re: White Noise

Hi Petecalgaro,

Check if the AUX input is set to "OFF" if not used.
