Topic: Audio interface

Hi,

I will record some vocals... I don't know if I should buy a Harddiscrecorder or a better PC (my is to old and slow)?

The music track are ready, so I do not need a good sound card?
But I need an audio interface? OR - and this is my question - can I use VLT and/or VL2 as audio interface?

Thanks, BR, Krzysztof

Re: Audio interface

Personallay i would use the audio interface of the vlt as the input device, and use some form of daw package, there are even some free/ very cheap ones you can use.

Record you vocal dry, no effects, so set the VLT to USB track mode, clean the recording ie remove any stray bits of sound etc, compress minimally and slight eq, to get nice overall sound. now add your effects, ie delay, reverb, etc, then finaly compress again. SHould give you a good starting point. remeber it is best to compress a few times with slight settings rather than one almightty compression.

Re: Audio interface

Thanks for your answer smile so I need no extra interface if I have a VLT?
As I buy M-Audio masterkeyboard there was - Ableton - but I have never use the software - can it be OK for it?

Re: Audio interface

If you already have an interface, you will probably have to install asio4all, wrap the interfaces as one, so that the DAW can see the devices.

Re: Audio interface

Hi,
so I have the VLT and in a few days a new laptop.
Probably I will use as DAW the Preaper.
Do I need any more software? Asio drivers?
Thanks! smile

Re: Audio interface

You should be ready to go, make sure you install asio4all as this will wrap the asio for VLT and the onboard audio into one device that will be seen by the DAW.

good luck

Re: Audio interface

OK, thanks! smile

Re: Audio interface

It's in the manual:
"USB Audio And ASIO Applications
PC-based ASIO apps such as Cubase may require you to install a WDM
to ASIO “wrapper” such as ASIO4ALL which is available at
www.asio4all.com in order for VoiceLive Touch to be recognized as an
audio device."

PS.  what I have to set: SETUP MENU
6. USB
Stereo
Track
Insert
?

Thanks!

Re: Audio interface

And 1 more question - if in a project are music datas - become VLT info about chords for harmony via USB? or I need a separate analog input to the aux input by the vlt? thanks smile

Re: Audio interface

The USB Setup is
STEREO : This is when you want the entire mix, (ie what you would hear through a P.A) to be recorded via the USB

TRACK is when you want the clean/unprocessed sound, vocals on one track and guitar on other track.

INSERT is when you want the VLT to act as an inserted fx processor to your daw.

For recording clean vocals (no applied effects dry vocal), set the USB to track mode.

If you want to record the entire vocal mix, without the backing so that you get your processed vocals:-
Set usb to stereo,  send music tracks to the VLT AUX in, so that it can apply the harmonies, but make sure that you turn the aux level to off on the VLT, so that it does not add the music to the vocal aswell.

Think i got that right

Re: Audio interface

Thank you, this is a very concred answer - my english is very bad, but I have all understand - now I know what is to do and can begin with the work...

Hmmm I heve to try reaper and ableton (m-audio edition = lite version) - can anybody say what is better? Or I should try both programs and chooce?

Re: Audio interface

Once you get to DAw programs, it is always a personal choice, try both the ones you have, and see which one accomplishes what you want the easiest.

try out all the vst effects you will be wanting to use and see which you prefer, as a last measure, a final test of a daw is the end result, so always do a full mix down, and compares this aswell.

Sorry i am not being specific, but a choice is personal, and to prefer one over another would open up a whole can of worms.
