Topic: Amazing progress and... not sure what's next

Hello people, my name is Peter and I posted a post on this forum about a year ago. I wrote there that I have huge problems singing in key. I knew when I was off, but couldn't hit right notes anyway.

Now, after that amount of time I finally managed to improve my singing and I am able to sing a song almost perfectly when I hear vocals well or when there's an instrument that plays the vocal part. I just can sing in key if I hear the notes I need to sing.

The problem begins when I want to sing to a chord. Let's say someone plays a chord on a piano and there is no instrument playing the vocal part. How am I supposed to know which note I should hit out of those that the chord consists of? I am really lost then, if you are able to, please help me, it's so important.

The chord key is the note you want to sing. If the root note to the chord is G then you would want to sing in the key of G in order to be in tune with the chord. The root note is always the key that you want to sing in. I have gotten away with singing in the key of A to everything but true musicians can hear it straight away when you do not sing in key. I hope someone has a better explanation for you. Peace

You could sing any note in the chord in fact you could sing any note in the major scale or minor scale that fits over the chord. They will all 'fit' in the right context. If you practice singing major scales over each chord then you will get a better idea of what fits on top of each chord/key. So if you were in A major which would be these chords. A Bm C#m D E F#m G#dim play each chord and sing the major scale A B C# D E F# G# A over each chord, Do this with various keys.

Then when you come back to a song you will more easily have an idea of all the note that fit over the key your in. Most pop songs will only use the major scale so it shouldn't take long to get some foundation developed..
