Re: What's the Best Microphone for (Melodic/Clean) Hard-Rock/Metal Vocals!

Ummm, let's say a small bar, and if I didn't have live accompaniment just like a small 15W amp capable of receiving an mp3 line through a computer as a backing track. what amp wud u recommend for that?

thanks!

15 Watts wil get you nowhere.

For a small bar (max 80 persons) this would be the absolute minimum:

Mind you: this is absolute minimal and by no means pro equipment! Don't expect miracles!

Maybe you're thinking of how guitar amps are rated.  I think at least a 250 watt per cabinet minimum will get you there for a PA.

Re: What's the Best Microphone for (Melodic/Clean) Hard-Rock/Metal Vocals!

I've been using a 100 watt Harbinger PA system for ceremonies and smallish corporate events.....It works and especially with small budgets.  But only for voice, solo instrument and vocal, and low audio playback.

Forgot to mention.  I also have been trying the Sampson "58" lookalikes that are 3 for $50.  Yes it's a low price.  They should surprisingly good for the price and they are getting integrated more often....  Great for meeting a budget.

I do alot of Alt-rock-grunge...RHCP, Bush, FooFighters ect. And my SM58 seems to get the job done... Only problem I run into is so pretty nasty feedback @ times when I'm using my Voicetone pedals.. Upgraded to a VL2 this week and bought an OM-05 I hope that combo will sound good and clear some of the feed back away.

Re: What's the Best Microphone for (Melodic/Clean) Hard-Rock/Metal Vocals!

A lot of people have talked about the Shure SM58.  It is inexpensive and it is so common that the sound signature is easily recognized.  So you get a 'classic' sound boost by going that route.

Rather than argue I'm going to concede that point and just call it a 'standard' from which to start your search.  It's cheap & safe.  Like so much in life that can also sometimes mean "boring".  That is of course a personal choice.

The original question was specifically about clear vocals sung to metal.  There have been many good suggestions, but mine is the Blue enCORE 300.  For clear vocals with good gain it simply performs.  My only complaint is the strangely mutated cardioid pattern [http://www.bluemic.com/encore/images/30 … -image.jpg]

Someone suggested the Blue enCORE 200.  They are quite different and I would recommend trying both so that you understand the difference.

I read someone else on the list asking about what to rehearse with in a small room.  My advice is a preamp & some headphones.  The VoiceLive2 is amazingly handy practice tool in this respect, IMHO...

when I see posts like this in any kind of forum, I think of the seaguls in finding nemo.... mine, mine, mine... a little morning humour.

I like the sure stuff. it does boost the eq a bit in the mid but that coloring fits vocals well.

Re: What's the Best Microphone for (Melodic/Clean) Hard-Rock/Metal Vocals!

The above post are really helpful to me as I am using Senn E965 but looking for Sennheiser e935 or Beta model..are they really good over my Senn E965?

Re: What's the Best Microphone for (Melodic/Clean) Hard-Rock/Metal Vocals!

If you want great tone that really cuts thru the mix try a beyer dynamic m88tg incredible gain before feedback. they are quite pricey, but it will make you throw your sm-58 away.

Re: What's the Best Microphone for (Melodic/Clean) Hard-Rock/Metal Vocals!

I tried out a beta 58 and am pleased to bits with the purchase. I like to sing abit softer but with the pg58 the off axis bleed was bad and I had to turn the gain way down and belt it out. now I can back it off and sing comfortably again.

Re: What's the Best Microphone for (Melodic/Clean) Hard-Rock/Metal Vocals!

I just switched to Beta 58A and I love it
It's very clear and relatively low feedback (compared to let's say, 55SHII, which is just for looks anyways lol) but it's better than a SM58 I think.running
