Re: Top 5 Vocalists in Rock Music

Arnel Pineda of Journey for me is the greatest rock singer I have ever heard. Just listen to him sing Heart's "Alone" on youtube. He blows everything away, not to mention his phenomenal high range.

No doubt technology helps most of us, but there are those rare individuals who seem to not need it.  Some of my pics do and some don't.  In this day and age I don't think people even care anymore...if the package is wrapped nicely and dumbed down enough they'll buy anything.  Thankfully there will always be those few who aspire to do more with what they've got than the average cat.  That was an awfully broad question...so many singers, so many styles, so many opinions.  Makes me chuckle to read the rants!  Hahaha, as if any of us really know???!!!  If you think you've got it all figured out, you probably don't smile

Sammy Hagar
Joey Belladonna
Chris Cornell
Phil Anselmo (Cowboys from Hell era)

Where words are silent, music speaks.

Re: Top 5 Vocalists in Rock Music

Frankie Miller
Steve Perry
Ian Gillan
Glen Hughes
Chris Cornell

Love all these singers, Frankie has been off the scene for a while due to ill health but has a qulity not even Paul Rodgers can achieve.
Steve Perry not doing much singing now but what a range.
Ian Gillan singing better than ever
Glen is so unppredicrable he has the best voice in Rock but looses the plot now and again, stick to rock Glen not white man soul.
Chris Cornell his new music does nothing for me or his voice, but when let loose, just amazing.

Re: Top 5 Vocalists in Rock Music

I need to think about this some more, but here are three off the top of my head.

Russell Alen - amazing voice, excited to hear some new Symphony X.

Chris Cornell - I'm not a fan of his solo stuff, but was amazing with Audioslave

Richie Kotzen - absolutely amazing. Former guitarist of Poison (his background vocals were waaaay better than Brett's leads), and has over 20 solo albums, but is not very well known. Amazing vocal and guitar skills. I highly advise you to check him out. Here is a song from his YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhCqEfkKa5s

Re: Top 5 Vocalists in Rock Music

Hi everyone,

The thread is an interesting read.  I was glad to see that Jens had mentioned Daniel Heiman, but I was saddend that no one mentioned Miljenko Matijevic.

Perhaps he would be worthy of considering somewhere in the list?

Thanks so much.

Doug

Re: Top 5 Vocalists in Rock Music

A great topic and some interesting selections here. I'm not a singer, just a guitarist who wants to learn to sing for my own recordings, so I can't really comment on the technical abilities of singers like most of you guys...

That said, here's my current top 5 Favourites (in no particular order):-

1) John Norum: (Guitarist from "Europe") I really like his singing on his solo albums, kind of really nice deep rock voice and a little raspy. I suspect most of you proper singers will think it's quite ordinary but I like it smile (Here's a clip if you don't know him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9DHKr9QapQ)

2) Tony Harnell: I suppose he counts as quite a "technical" singer but really I just love the sound of his voice whatever style or range he's singing in. He's one of the few singers where (even with my limited understanding of singing) I think I can hear different resonances and things as he moves through different ranges. (like in the first verse, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oB-3tPmaOU)

3) Ritchie Kotzen: Someone mentioned him above. Yes, must have been embarrassing for Brett Michaels - Ritchie has a fantastic voice. I think he also has a very slight lisp in speech and that seems to work really well in his singing.

4) Geddy Lee: I have no idea if he's a good singer or not but I grew up listening to him so hearing his voice is like hearing my parents or something! Seeing Rush live I've been struck by just how fantastically "melodic" he sounds (crap term, I know)

5) Sting: This is a weird one because some people (including Jamie, I think) said he's a great singer. He always sounds to me like he's straining at the top of his range (lots of 80's pop singers seemed to do that) and singing with a blocked up nose. I kind of always assumed he wasn't a very good singer technically, though I love his voice. I guess I'm wrong there!
