Re: How to alleviate nasal congestion

Chen,

I have quite a recurrent problem with sinus problems myself, and here's what seems to work best for me, depending on how bad it gets.

1) I thoroughly cleaned out a 2 oz. spray bottle (from a herbal throat spray), filled it with DISTILLED water. and then spray it into each nostril.
2) A mixture of distilled water and saline (over the counter). There are various name brands but I use Ayr,  Equate, or Ocean. It's all basically the same.
3) Caution with this product: Another product made by Ocean which comes in a aerosol can, called "Ultra" is another option, but it is definitely not for me. I've tried it a couple of times, and while it's supposed to be effective, I've noticed it's like filling up your nostrils with lighter fluid and lighting a match.  OUCH !!! But perhaps, it just has that effect on me, but I thought I would mention it.
4) I also have a prescription for Veramyst which works well, but is expensive. I use this RARELY. Only when my condition gets serious. It also can dry out the throat and sinuses too much, which is counter-productive, and is why I use it as a last resort.
5) Several years ago, my chiropractor told me to do the following: Fill a pan/pot of water, add some sea salt, bring it to a boil, and then inhale the mist. It works quite well. (You'll find a similar method in Jamie's Book RYV II, and I've used that with success as well). For both, place a towel over your head to trap the mist, while bending over the pan.
6)I also use both a cold and hot mist humidifier, each and every night. It has made quite a difference.
7) Finally, drink more water, no matter which method you choose.

Hope this has helped...

I've heard great things from other singers in regards to using the products Jaime mentioned.

Of course, the obvious answer is to figure out why you are having nasal congestion and treat the cause instead of the symptoms. smile

Re: How to alleviate nasal congestion

I have noticed the more I practice, the more I get nose and throat clogs. If I sing/practice for hours a day, The next morning I sometimes have full on cold symptoms but they clear up during the day. I guess my point is, sometimes the symptoms are the body healing itself naturally. You can't always blame your environment. It might be just coming from all the work and stresses from learning to sing with ease.  Ciao for now.  John

Re: How to alleviate nasal congestion

Drinking plenty of fluids, more than usual, aids the body in expelling the irritant and clearing congestion. Water, fruit juice, and teas are recommended by medical experts to resolve congestion, and rest and sleep are also suggested remedies in a case of nasal congestion.[citation needed] Sitting upright and not lying down will relieve some nasal congestion. Avoid substances causing dehydration, for example caffeine. Increasing air moisture with a humidifier or a steamy bath or shower usually helps relieve the congestion and accompanying discomfort.

Re: How to alleviate nasal congestion

Hello, I have I even a problem with my sine, my doctor indicated me a solution of physiological salt solution, and thus some water getting closer to some sea water but also the one that we have in the body and in our tears.
And as I use it every day, I buy bottles of physiological salt solution and I inject with a big syringe this in every nostril every morning.
The typical flasks " ocean " or " prorhynel " etc. are by way of the physiological salt solution simply, thus keep your money and buy simple bottles which we find in pharmacy very easily and cheap.
bye bye

There is actually an amazing 'trick' of sorts to work out sinus congestion really rapidly and without much effort. All you do is place your forefinger right between your eyes on the nose, then rhythmically 'see-saw' your sinus by pushing in (LIGHTLY) on the bone and pushing your tongue into the roof of your mouth. That will create an alternating pressure on your ethmoid and vomer bones which will cause your sinuses to drain!! Yes I know it sounds fantastic but give it a shot, you will probably be quite amazed by how efficacious it can be.

Re: How to alleviate nasal congestion

Nasal congestion occurs when the membranes of your nose become swollen, making it difficult to breathe. Nasal congestion can be caused by the common cold, a sinus infection, allergies or the flu. There are many simple ways to relieve nasal congestion through medications and home remedy treatments.

Instructions
1
Try over the counter medications. Look for medicines containing decongestants and antihistamines. Decongestants will reduce swelling in the nasal passages, while antihistamines will dry up excess mucus. Popular medications for nasal congestion include Claritin and Sinutab. You can also buy combination products such as Tylenol Sinus or Advil Cold and Sinus, which combine a pain reliever with a decongestant.
2
Use nasal spray for instant relief. Nasal sprays such as Afrin provide instant yet sometimes temporary relief from nasal congestion. Though they may not cure the causes of your nasal congestion, nasal sprays help you feel better. Do not use nasal spray for more than three or four days without consulting a doctor. Longer use of such sprays can cause your symptoms to worsen and some people can become addicted.
3
Boil water and salt in a small saucepan. Turn off the stove and wait until the mixture has cooled down to a lukewarm temperature. Using an eyedropper, put three or four drops of the saltwater in each nostril. Keep leaning your head back for two minutes. Repeat two to three times per day to help relieve nasal congestion.
4
Steam your sinuses. Boil water in a large pan. Add mint leaves or eucalyptus leaves while boiling. Remove the pan from the stove. While the water is still hot and steaming, hold your face directly over the pan to let the steam enter your nasal passages. You can put a towel over your head to form a tent and keep the steam in.
5
Massage your face. Massaging the sides of your nose, your forehead and other pressure points on your face will help reduce the swelling in your sinus passages and lessen nasal congestion.
