Topic: irritation of vocal cords by tea?

Is it possible for food/drinks to irritate the vocal cords directly? I notice that hot unsweetened, milk-less tea (green tea, brown tea, camomile etc) irritates my throat. It's as if it strips my throat of lubricant (imagine wiping your tongue dry with tissue). I understand that drinks do not touch the vocal cords on their way down but is there any possibility of irritation on the vocal cords due to leakage past the epiglottis? That's how it feels like but I'm not sure how accurate that sensation is. Is it possible to feel the vocal cords at all? Thanks!

Re: irritation of vocal cords by tea?

donnygg,

Here are my recommendations for teas that work well for me : Throat Coat and Throat Comfort. Personally, I prefer the latter, and it soothes the throat very well. All herbal, and no caffeine. I always have one or two cups prior to bedtime, and while singing, drink it LUKEWARM, not HOT. I also alternate with water while practicing. With that, make sure the water is room temperature and not cold

I also use a tablespoon of honey on occasion that soothes the throat. You may also want to try slippery elm lozenges.

I understand that Ginseng tea works well also, but I cannot use it due to BP issues, which is unfortunate, as I like the taste.

Personally, I deal with http://www.I-Herb.com  Very reasonable prices.

I'm not a doctor, so I cannot comment on the "leakage" issue that you have referred to.

Hope this has helped.

Re: irritation of vocal cords by tea?

Well, what do I know?

I imagine if you had leakage to the vocal cords, you'd feel like choking.   Cough, cough, etc.

Your pharynx being dry would definitely affect your singing though.

Don't suspect you're in much danger of any kind though (unless you continue to drink said drink).   So, next time you have to visit an ENT doc, ask them to take a look.   They can do this in less than 1 minute.  Keep singing though.

Re: irritation of vocal cords by tea?

I cant sing after i drink throat coat, but it is my number one remedy for sore throats at bed time, if I try to sing after drinking this, i get a "leaky" feeling too???? Wake up after having drank it at bed time with a nice feeling throat, for sure smile maybe the leaky feeling is icky stuff coming off the throat and vocal cords...

Re: irritation of vocal cords by tea?

Rychemaiden,

Try the Throat COMFORT instead. What a difference in the two. I use it with every "session" - at room temperature. I don't know what the difference is, but it works well for me. I also placed an order for a new product last night- this one includes Echinachea.  I'm going to try a different throat spray, too. I noticed there's another tea that helps with the breathing as well, but it's been out of stock for quite some time, unfortunately.

GREAT point about the "icky stuff"... I didn't give that a thought with my last post. I'm wondering if the gargle that Jamie recommends in RYV II would be of help.....I think I'm developing an "addiction" to it... HA smile
I use it as is, but I also add some slippery elm powder and a bit of peroxide to the mix at times. I use it before and after each "session". (Sometimes, in between, depending on how long I'm singing). But I ALWAYS have my water there with me...

Hi Pam,

What are you waiting for? smile Get "right on" RYV... (Kidding- I know how busy you are). smile

But yes, try Throat Comfort,.And for a quick reference for the gargles, they're on pages 166, which I use for more severe cases of a sore throat, and page 448 (last paragraph), which I use every day, several times. To the latter, I add a 1/2 tsp. of slippery elm powder, and a few drops of peroxide.
It's become part of my daily regimen, and has worked very well for me.

I also use the slippery elm lozenges. I read up on them, and seems they were being used by vocalists since the 1800's. I'll let you know about  the other tea w/ echinachea. The order from I-Herb is on its way !

Re: irritation of vocal cords by tea?

Thanks for the replies. Something just struck me regarding the leakage issue. Since people with acid reflux suffer vocal cord damage due to attack by acid and enzymes from the stomach, does that imply that leakage does occur? Also, in RYV2, Jaime wrote that lemon juice "contains citric acid, which is harsh on the vocal cords". Is that due to leakage too?

Re: irritation of vocal cords by tea?

Hey Adolph!! Isnt cause im too busy...I'm dying to get started on RYV2 !! Want to insert a new paradigm after i've got my "mindset" right smile

Hey donnygg,

Not a doctor either, but I went to a couple of industry sources as well as googling epiglottis leakage all are suggesting that leakage can and does occur.  Though they are focused on air leakage it seems liquid in some form can make it past the epiglottis.  If you are feeling this on the vocal cords it seem logical a vapor leaking from the tea could be aggravating the area. I'm not sure why Ryche can't sing after drinking throatcote tea.  Maybe you're allergic to something in it that numbs you, can the leaky feeling be "cleared"?

As Nightprowler (who seems to have a thought out regimen) suggested, Slippery Elm Lozenges are a a great start.  Slippery Elm is a natural anti-acid in the last couple years FDA approved OTC.  We suggest dissolving a lozenge in your mouth about 1/2 hour before performing, again after performing and before bed.  While helping keep your stomach acid settled from the bouncing diaphragm it can absorb into the throat cavity replenishing the slickness and protection against irritation. They're suttle but I have replaced all others with them for indigestion.

Nightprowler, I'd like to know which throat spray you are going to try.

Re: irritation of vocal cords by tea?

hi ya JGS!! smile ever used Vocal Eze?? I kinda get a licorace taste going with it and Throat coat, and cant sing with that "scratchiness/clogginess", right after using it, but its a "gotta have" to cure throat ailments for me if I can use it a night time...not allergic to "nuffin" according to my allergist...:) so why did I go there?? hmmm...good question....

Re: irritation of vocal cords by tea?

In a word, yes.  It is similar to ClearVoice Original and Singer's Saving Grace Pro Strength all using licorice as a flavor and an ingredient.  I've heard that SSG uses the intense licorice to cover the horrible taste of the osha root, which isn't in their citrus honey flavor.

The effect you described and might feel can be likened to using peroxide on a cut, peroxide is dormant until it hits the infection and then burn and sizzle.  This may be happening in your throat.  Can't say whether it's good or bad, except to comment that anything that prevents you from singing at least within a couple minutes recovery time seems bad.  Only one spray I've found doesn't have a recovery time, Entertainer's Secret, it doesn't have the intensity of the others and is more for hydration http://entertainerssecret.com.

Make sure you safely clear your throat and for goodness sake stay hydrated.

Along the allergen thought, there may be something that your allergist hasn't checked, maybe a compound of ingredients.

Re: irritation of vocal cords by tea?

Scott,

The new spray I just ordered is "Natural Factors, Echinamide, Throat Spray Formula with Propolis".
I'm still waiting on the order, and haven't had the opportunity to try it yet. I can let you know how it works when I receive it...

I've been using Entertainer's Secret for quite some time now, as well as Vocal Eze,  Clear Voice,
and Thayer's Dry Mouth Spray. There is one other that I use, Wellness Herbal Throat Spray, by Source Naturals. Though not while singing, only afterwards as it's very potent, or at least seems that way to me. But it works quite well after a long "workout". I also use it just before bedtime, and my throat feels GREAT when I wake up the next AM.  I can't say that I favor any one in particular, as they all seem to work quite well, at least for me. Though I have read some reviews from others who dislike some of these for one reason or another.

Pam,

Mindset is AWESOME !!!  Wish I had read it months ago .... smile
