  Yes, I think this effect is used way too much in modern hip hop styles or dance oriented music…but hey, it sounds kewl and I'm glad to have it in my arsenal. I use it on a couple of songs…just cause…haha, my keyboard player hates it and teases me about it but when the fans dig it what can ya' say?!

  It can be a rather effective sound…just try using it in a way that's unusual to it's prescription. Recently I used it on a spirtual tune, where the music drops out save a small acousitic strum…this effect, layered with delay, transducer, and 2 part harmony created a very delicate tension between the parts that it bridged and folks seem to really like it…funny though…even though Kanye and TPain have it cornered in the modern market…most people still call it the “Cher” effect…she was hardly the first to use it but about the only heavy that gave it a chance in the 90s. Vocoding and Hard Tuning have been around for years…but it was a real labor of love to generate back then…now it's as simple as calling up a preset. My first experience with Hard Tuning was with an old Digitech Vocalist…they don't hold a candle to TC…but I was thankful then for what I had.

  I can't imagine that these singature textures will stay on top for long, but right now they're kingpin within the dance community. And, there's no doubt that a decade or so after they die…the will surely resurface.
