Review: Neumann TLM102

Item: Neumann TLM102

Price: US $699.00, UK £421.00 – £486.00

Mic Scale:

At a Glance: For decades Neumann’s microphones have been used in top studios around the world, however their price has tended to put them out reach of many who record their music at home. By stripping down some of the options that you would typically get on high-end models, Neumann’s TLM102 aims to recreate that classic Neumann sound, but at a price that is much more affordable.

High Notes: On vocals the TLM102 produces excellent results, however it is also a versatile mic, producing good results with a wide range of other instruments as well. It has a subtle presence lift around 6KHz that helps to bring sounds out to the front of a mix without sounding artificial and overly hyped.

Off Pitch: As this is an entry-level Neumann, many extras have been removed. There is no shock-mount or storage case included and the microphone has no pad or filter switches on it.

A VoiceCouncil Reviewer Says: In use, the Neumann TLM102 consistently delivers pleasing results that bring the most out of a performance. On vocals it really shines, with it’s clear top end combined with a flattering and well defined mid range. At around $699 it faces competition from cheaper alternatives made in China, however if you want German build quality and excellent sound quality, it is hard to find faults with the TLM102.
