Top Tips for Audition Success

These time honored truths will improve your audition success –says Mister Tim

I’ve been on both sides of the auditioning table for bands, plays, musicals, films, and vocal groups.

Knowing what it is like for the “auditioners” can help you make a more effective impression.

Have some empathy. Running auditions is not easy.  Be kind to those people, they are working hard, too!

Don’t misinterpret. Audition rejections are usually not personal –there are a thousand factors you have not even dreamt of influencing decisions.

Stay gracious. Don’t judge or resent or complain if you don’t get a part; be gracious and keep working.

Persevere. It often takes several auditions in front of someone before they will cast you.

Think long-term. Every audition you do is also partially part of your next audition for those people.

ALWAYS be kind – because you are going to meet most of these people again, and they next time you audition they will remember the impression they had of you this time.

A Final Word

The people behind the table do not want you to fail… they WANT you to be brilliant!  They WANT you to amaze them!

They have been sitting there all day watching average talent do average things; they want someone to come in and dazzle them!

Yet, “auditioners” cannot see what you do not show them.

You know what you are capable of, but if you don’t show that immediately the auditioners won’t ask you to do it again so you can do it correctly.

Go all-out, give it your absolute best, from beginning to end.

    Auditions are like job interviews.
The more they want the more you give.
The more you want the less they give.
It’s more or less likely or unlikely that you’ll either get or not get the part or role or job.

What with knowing that nobody knows whether they will or will not like you. And knowing that they all know that you know that they know that and everything else.
Somewhere in the mix of things someone either will or will not pass or would have passed if only someone had told everyone……..
That this is just an audition…Not a bloody hanging trial!
